When Yahoo Inc took its time to deliver keynote in the recent Consumer Electronics Store 2014 held in Las Vegas, it made sure it would command greater attention. It succeeded especially when the period became a star-studded one as CEO Marissa Mayer was later joined by several celebrities who each represent a role in the technology firm for this year.
First on the list of those stars was broadcast anchor Katie Couric. Mayer surprised her audience when she called to the stage Couric, who has a new role at the company after joining it in the last quarter of last year. She would be presenting news online this year through a special section of feature of the Website,
Then, Mayer introduced Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson to deliver the ‘Saturday Night Live’ Weekend Update spoof featuring jabs aimed at Grumpy Cat, Snapchat, and bitcoin. These are among the most talked about in the year in the field of technology.
The entertainment factor of the Yahoo keynote went on. To close her presentation, Mayer brought in performer John Legend, who did his rendition of ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ an original track from The Beatles. Legend went on to do a number of other songs that wowed the audience.
New Yahoo sites
But what really took attention were the announcements made, especially the unveiling of several new products of the company this year. The first to star in the keynote as the Yahoo News Digest, which is set to solve a problem of that is called ‘information overload.’ The new site would provide two important and interesting summaries per day.
Two new digital magazines were launched. Yahoo Tech would offer exclusive initial reviews and videos produced by David Pogue, a former columnist of the New York Times. Yahoo Food is a place where recipes as well as cooking techniques are being showcased and shared to interested readers.
Newly acquired app
Not to be missed was Mayer’s opening salvo for home screen app Aviate, which it recently acquired. She emphasized that the app would deliver only the right experiences rendered at the right time for the company. The app would also come up with new, interesting features. It would suggest map apps to users who need to find out gyms or fitness centers in the vicinity.
Lastly, Mayer emphasized the importance of mobile to businesses. She assured the public that they will keep informed through Yahoo’s brand new projects and initiatives coming in the next few days or weeks.
