A few days back Xiaomi surprised everyone by entering the portable action camera industry with the all new Xiaomi Yi Action camera. This particular device is targeted at sports enthusiasts and adventure freaks who would like to record what they do at a very affordable price.
The device will directly compete with the market leader right now; namely GoPro. However, with its super cheap pricing, the device does have an edge over the entry level GoPro range. Specs wise, the Yi Action camera comes with a 16MP Sony EXMOR R BSI sensor which can record 1080p videos at 60fps. The device uses an ambarella image processing technology and even supports ultra-slow motion videos at 240 fps. However, the resolution will be limited to 848 x 480 pixels in this mode. The device is even waterproof, so the user can shoot videos under water too.
The highlight of the device is its 155 degree wide angle lens.
The camera is pretty compact and measures just 60.4 x 42 x 21.2mm. This specially makes it a very handy device to carry around wherever you go. Plus, it weighs just about 72 grams, further adding to its portability factor.
The Xiaomi Yi Action Camera comes with a power button on the front, a shutter button on top, and indicator lights. On the left of the device is the Wi-Fi button, which once enabled, will help you to connect the device with your smartphone. Users will have to download and install the companion app to tweak most of the settings on this camera.
As mentioned above, the biggest selling point of the device is its price tag. Xiaomi Yi Camera is available in China for just 399 Yuan, which comes to around $63. That’s a very cheap price for a portable action camera. Unfortunately, the device is limited to China at the moment and the company has supplied no plans for an international or U.S. release.
