Doors are now open for previously unheard victims to spill out their agony – Sweden now runs the world’s first center for male rape victims. The center has bloomed as a strategy to provide gender equality in care for the affected.
Sweden is pioneering a lot of good things – employees there are enjoying 6 hour work days and it is gearing up to be the world’s first fossil fuel free nation. “We are happy that we now can finally open the first rape clinic for men following the rape clinic for women,” says Rasmus Jonlund, the Press Spokesperson, Liberal Party, ahead of the launch.
The team is quite unsure as to how many will use the new founded facility, but they are certain that many are indeed affected severely and don’t seek care.
370 cases of sexual violence against boys and men were reported across the nation in 2014. The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, however, believes that the figure is an under-count and hidden victims are much higher.
“Emergency medical care for raped men will be free of charge and offered around the clock, all year,” says Marie Ljungberg Schöt, the Local Moderate Party Politician and Council Representative on Emergency Care about the launch.
The facility will also treat boys and transgenders exclusively.
Myths and the general macho surrounding masculinity often keep sexually abused men mute. Men often find it difficult to see themselves as victims and end up blaming themselves for such incidents; they live guilt ridden all life long.
Not just in Sweden, one in 71 men in the US accepted that they had been raped or were attempted as a target, indicating that such sexual assault issues need more awareness.
