A UC Berkeley sexual harassment scandal is certainly surprising news for the esteemed educational institution, but as new documents begin to surface we now know that 19 different employees of UCB are involved in sexual harassment cases against students. These documents cover seven years.

Out of these 19 different people, 11 have already left the institution either by means of termination or resignation. A faculty member, disability specialist, massage therapist and an astronomer are amongst those who were mentioned in the papers.

The massage therapist in question reportedly tried to repeatedly “touch” the genitals of a female student even upon her consistent request for him to focus on her upper arm. This is just one of the many unsettling stories that have surfaced so far.

According to an article by The Guardian, Prof. Lezlie Salzinger of gender and women’s studies at the institution says, “The issue with Berkeley is not that there’s more harassment, but one would expect an institution like this to do a better job responding. I hope that we will.”

Cases like this are uncommon, but they’re definitely not rare. There have been many cases in other prestigious universities across the globe that have been given a ‘blind eye’ as it affects the reputation of the school. However, we also have to note that Berkeley is definitely taking strides for the future. Their investigation is still ongoing.

President Janet Napolitano once said in 2014 that, “We at the University of California must maintain zero tolerance for sexual violence and assault. I am committed ensuring the University of California paves the way.”

We all hope that these issues get resolved as soon as possible. Tell us what you think about our university culture by commenting below.
