Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, tweeted on Sunday about the television ratings for his inauguration. He said that 31 million people watched the inauguration. He claimed that is 11 million more viewers than Obama’s inauguration broadcast four years ago. However, many believe that President Trump is making wrong comparisons. This is because second terms normally do not attract as many viewers as the first time around.

Donald Trump Vs Barack Obama

As a result, most media outlets are now comparing President Trump’s inauguration viewership with Obama’s 2009 numbers instead of 2013. An article in Fortune states that the comparison shows Trump’s numbers as 18 percent less than Barack Obama’s. According to a report in AOL News, Trump’s inauguration secured 30.6 million total viewers. These were audiences of 12 broadcast and cable networks, which were live on January 20.

As against this, in 2009, Barack Obama’s inauguration attracted 37.8 million viewers. His second term saw the number stand at 20.6 million. This is still lesser than what Ronald Reagan’s inauguration managed to attract. Reagan’s inauguration received 41.8 million viewers glued in to their television sets.

Largest audience ever

However, the inauguration ceremony was not in the news only for its TV ratings. The event was marred by the Women’s march on Washington, which attracted a million protesters. The President and his administration was silent about it earlier. However, he later tweeted a sarcastic “was under the impression that we just had an election!” states an article in Washington Post.

According to a report in the New York Times, the President’s first day in office was a mixed bag too. His press secretary told the reporters in the briefing room that President Trump attracted “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe”. However, National Mall photographs, a PBS time lapse video and public transport figures contradict his statements.
