Top 10 Must-Watch Performances From MTV EMA 2015

Held at the Mediolanum Forum in Assago near Milan, Italy, the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards was the talk of the town last night. Accolades were won, fandoms clashed, and of course, no music award ceremony is complete without any musical acts.

Featuring a vast array of star-studded performances, the lineup consisted of acts spanning several genres, and all of them left notable musical aftertastes.

Here, we’ve collected our top 10 performances at the MTV EMAs 2015.

10. Andrea Bocelli – Con Te Partiro

What better way to kickstart this list than with Andrea Bocelli’s soothing voice? You’d think that just because it’s the MTV EMAs, the performances would be all hip and trendy and other what-have-yous kids consider cool these days. Bocelli just proved us wrong with his moving vocals backed up by the audience’s sing-alongs.

9. Pharrell Williams – Freedom

Pharrell opens his act with a brief spiel on what else but the concept of freedom, and it was the perfect prelude to his performance. Accompanied by an array of colorful dancers, Pharrell graced fans with his usual uplifting spunk. Freedom was nominated for Best Video, but lost against Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Downtown.

8. Fifth Harmony – Worth It

The girls of Fifth Harmony continue to wow audiences by taking it to the next level and bringing their performance on a red carpet, with the long runway surrounded by fans before leading the group towards their actual stage. Time and time again, these girls prove just how talented they are, and at the EMAs, they gave us yet another reason as to why they’re worth it.

7. James Bay – Hold Back The River

James Bay, nominated for Best New Act and Best Push, brought folk-rock to the EMAs with Hold Back The River, inducing the audience into a mellow crowd of soft chants and uniformed arm swaying. The indie cafe gig vibes were definitely evident.

6. Jess Glynne – My Love / Hold My Hand / Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself

Beginning her act with delicate piano keys and an intimate voice for My Love, Jess Glynne raises the energy by transitioning to the very danceable Hold My Hand before moving towards Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself, keeping the crowd energetic and lively to the very end. Despite being nominated in several categories, she failed to take home any awards that night.

5. Jason Derulo – Want Me To Live

The Wiggle singer brought people to their feet with his lively performance, but what was most attention-grabbing about his stint was the fact that he performed entirely on a hands-free segway — complete with actual choreography at that. While he was nominated for Best Male, he lost the award to Justin Bieber.

4. Ed Sheeran and Rudimental – Lay It All On Me

While Ed Sheeran was praised for his humorous air as a co-host next to actress Ruby Rose for the awards show, he was not left out of the performance festivities either, charming viewers everywhere with his cool vocals that complemented the U.K. group’s electronic sound. Sheeran had a lot to celebrate about, having won the awards for Best Live Act and Best World Stage.

3. Justin Bieber – What Do You Mean?

Biebs, who took home several awards that night — including the awards for Best Male and Biggest Fans — sang his hit track, What Do You Mean, wowing the crowd with his signature swagger and a pseudo-light show to complement his dance moves.

2. Twenty One Pilots – Tear In My Heart

Musical duo Twenty One Pilots — who were nominated for the Best Alternative Award, but lost to Lana Del Rey — have always delivered when it came to live performances, and the 2015 MTV EMAs were no exception. Fans were treated with a special performance as the two rocked out in front of the historical and stunning cathedral, Duomo di Milano.

1. Tori Kelly – Should’ve Been Us / No Scrubs / Ready Or Not

Tori Kelly delivered a stunning rendition TLC’s No Scrubs and followed it with Fugees’ Ready Or Not before closing her performance with Should’ve Been Us. Never mind that she didn’t take home the Best New Act Award; the medley she gave was smooth and seamless, and it proved to the world that she is definitely 2015’s breakout star.
