Toddler Is Burned And Loses Family To Arson – Asks For Christmas Cards To Feel Better

A young girl from New York who has suffered burns from a tragic house fire caused by arson wants just one thing this Christmas, and that’s some simple well wishes from loved ones and strangers alike.

5-year-old Safyre Terry is the lone survivor of a house fire that took the lives of her family two years ago in Schenectady, New York. The tragedy caused the deaths of her father, 32-year-old David Terry, and her three younger siblings: 3-year-old Layah, 2-year-old Michael, and 11-month-old Donavon. Firefighters found Safyre next to her father who used his body to shield her from the flames.

According to the Daily Gazette, the arson still remains unsolved despite a federal jury convicting one man in November for lying to a grand jury that had been investigating the fire at the time.

Safyre suffered burns to over 75 percent of her body, and according to her aunt, Liz Dodler, has had numerous surgeries following the fire.

“Safyre has had multiple operations, over 50,” said Dodler — who has sole custody over Safyre — to BuzzFeed. “She had lost her right hand, three months after the fire and lost her left foot in March. She continues to have problems with her mouth due to the scar tissue tightening up. Her next operation is on January 5th.”

In light of Safyre’s injuries, a family friend of hers started a YouCaring Compassionate Crowdfunding campaign as an effort to raise money in order to assist her aunt with the cost of Safyre’s medical care. Of the requested $15,000, over $13,700 has been raised.

Dodler, who is already the mother to four young children with her husband Mike, shared how Safyre was instantly excited when she caught sight of the tree her aunt bought to hang Christmas cards on for the holiday season.

“I can’t wait to fill it up,” said Safyre, to which her aunt responded, “Honey, that’s probably not gonna happen. We maybe get ten cards a year, and the card tree holds one hundred.”

But that did not hinder Dodler. She decided to do something about it and thus reached out to Facebook friends, writing, “I wonder how many of my friends would take the time to write and send Safyre a Merry Christmas card that she can hang on her card tree…”

Following the request, which she posted on December 3, hundreds of people have stated in the comments that they intend to send Safyre a card. Later on, Dodler shared a touching photo on Monday of an elated Safyre holding a pile of cards that she received in the mail.

If you want to put a smile on Safyre’s face as well, Christmas cards can be sent to this address: P.O. Box 6126 Schenectady, NY 12306, USA.
