Strangers ‘Ambushed’ Woman At Parking Lot – What They Did To Her Will Make You Smile

Lauryn Lax was a woman who had been suffering from anorexia, a serious eating disorder, since she was just 9 years old. After 18 years of suffering, Lauryn weighed just 79 pounds at 27 years of age – unhealthily underweight, she was truly on the brink of death.

A regular at her local YMCA gym, Lauryn’s ghastly thin appearance made it hard for people not to stare at her. She was becoming dangerously thin, and the other gym regulars could not watch anymore. They were afraid that if they didn’t say something that day, they would never see Lauryn again.

When Lauryn stepped into the gym as usual on that fateful day, she was surprised by a stranger coming up to her. After he wished her a good morning, Lauryn says that several other strangers approached her as well, and one “stepped forward and said, ‘Lauryn, we’re scared for you.'”

After watching Lauryn grow thinner and thinner, this group of strangers who went to the same gym, whom Lauryn would later come to refer to as “angels” decided to stage an intervention. After tracking down and contacting her parents who informed them of Lauryn’s eating disorder, and the fact that she’d been in and out of treatment for most of her life, they set things in motion.

Initially, when the group of people approached Lauryn and expressed their concerns about her appearance, telling her that they were going to take her to the hospital, she protested. The concerned people would not give up on her however, and eventually they were able to convince Lauryn to go with them to the hospital.

Upon being checked out, Lauryn’s state of health was so dire that she was admitted to the hospital and stayed in intensive care for 3 days, after which she was transferred to the cardiac arrest unit where she stayed for another 3 weeks until her heart stabilized. Then, Lauryn was given an ultimatum by the doctors.

Lauryn recalls, “The doctor came to me and said you can stay another six to eight weeks in bed with a feeding tube or you could go into a residential treatment center to get to the bottom of your illness… I opted for the residential center in Miami, where I stayed for almost a year.”

Now, after 3 years of treatment, Lauryn is 36 pounds heavier and in a much better state than she was when those strangers first approached her with their concerns. She credits these people, who were mere strangers to her, with saving her life and knows that if not for them taking an interest in her, she would probably not be alive today.

Lauryn has since decided to go back to school and now has a doctorate in occupational therapy. She has opened her own therapy center, THRIVE Wellness and Recovery, to help others who suffer from anorexia as she once did.
