The Chief Executive of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, says he is upgrading his Tesla autopilot driving system. The said development could indeed save the lives of computer-controlled-car users. Tesla drivers doubted the authenticity of the system last May after accidents took place. These tragedies fueled up comments about the false security features of the breakthrough technology.
Tesla Autopilot: The revolutionary radar
Driving schools teach their students not to focus on the car in front of them alone. Road safety requires the ability to expect an accident from two to four cars ahead. According to Fortune, that is exactly what the Tesla radar is capable of doing. The company recently released a video of a Model X car in the Dutch roadway. The dashboard camera of the vehicle captured a developing collision before the driver realized what was happening. In other words, the radar saw the movement of the car in front of the other car ahead of the Tesla.
In the clip, the Autopilot’s Forward Collision Warning sent a distress sound in advance. It was later revealed that the system predicted that the car in front of the test subject will crash. It actually hit an SUV which was not visible to the driver at first. The Autopilot then started braking before the driver could apply the brakes himself.
Tesla Autopilot 8.0
Per Mercury News, Autopilot 8.0 uses radar signals to “bounce” around objects. It includes obstructions that the driver may be blind to. Just three months ago, Tesla unveiled its new sensor processing technology. It came in with the first generation Autopilot hardware.
“A Tesla will be able to brake even when trailing a car that is opaque to both vision and radar,” a Tesla post read. Among the astounding features of the upgrade, one is the ability of the system to track two cars ahead. This enables any Tesla Model X and Model S to react quicker even if other vehicles are obstructing the view.
