We knew September was going to be a busy month given that many tech giants were going to release their best handsets in the market. Samsung has already unveiled its Note 4 flagship, which exceeded everyone’s expectations and if rumors turn out to be true, the next Apple iPhone 6 too is going to be a powerful device.
Among these highly successful smartphone manufacturers, there is Sony. The Japanese giant has not really managed to impress the tech crowd with their Xperia series of smartphones. Don’t get me wrong, Xperia devices are beautifully designed and as powerful as other flagships too, but for some reason, other companies have always been one step ahead of Sony.
And as expected Sony announced its latest flagship, Xperia Z3 at IFA Berlin and the specifications and the design of the device looks good but not as good as we thought. It comes with the same rectangular bar design adopted by all previous Xperia smartphones. Z3 is very thin, and at .29 inches, it’s even thinner than the iPhone 5S.
On the front, there’s a large 5.2 inch IPS screen with a disappointing 1080p resolution. All other flagships have a Quad HD resolution, so we expected Z3 to come with one too. Inside, there’s a Snapdragon 801 chipset with a quad core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 CPU, 3GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. You get 16GB/ 32GB memory options along with a MicroSD card slot expandable up to 128GB.
Sony has built in a 20.7 MP rear camera on the device with OIS and LED flash, which can record 2K videos as well as ultra-slow motion videos.
You get all the standard connectivity features on the device like NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G, 4G LTE etc. Given the unibody design, the 3100 mAh battery on the back is non-removable. But, it should easily be able to power the device for an entire day.
One interesting feature of the device is that it can now be used as a Playstation 4 controller. So, whenever you feel like, just replace your dual shock controller with your Xperia Z3 smartphone. You can even use the PS4 Remote Play option to convert your smartphone into Playstation’s portable screen.
Like all previous generations, Xperia Z3 is water proof as well as dust proof. So, you can take pictures even 3 feet underwater without worrying about spoiling your brand new phone.
To sum up, Xperia Z3 has all the goodies that you would expect from a flagship, but it fails to deliver the kind of specs or features that fans are looking for. There are many great alternatives with better specs in the market, which may spoil the sales of this newly announced Sony flagship.
