Samsung likely to release Galaxy S5 at the Unpacked event on February 24

Over the past few weeks, there have been several reports that suggested Samsung was planning to launch its next flagship device, Samsung Galaxy S5, earlier than expected. Looks like these reports were true indeed as the company has sent out invitations for the Samsung Unpacked event to be held on February 24.

The event will be held at Barcelona, Spain during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show. Although the company has sent out invitations to a number of parties, it does not give any details as to what it will showcase at the event. However, even without any official announcement, many experts and fans are taking cues from the hints given by the company.

For example, on the invite alongside the bold UNPACKED title, Samsung has added a number ‘5’. While this is a satisfying hint to conclude that the company will most likely release the next flagship during the event, the invite further throws in some details like Galaxy S4’s March launch and Note 3’s September release.

Last year, the company had made a similar invite for the Unpacked event. The invite had the words, ‘Ready 4 the Show’ which hinted of the launch of the S4. Given that the recent invite has the magic word ‘5’, there’s a very high chance that the company may indeed release the flagship a month before the usual launch.

While the details of the ‘Next Big Thing’ from Samsung are thin, there have been certain rumors about the specifications of the device. Rumors suggest that the company will include a 1140 QHD 2K display on the flagship as an improvement to the S4’s 1920 x 1080p Super Amoled screen. The company may also adopt a full metal body for the device moving away from the tradition plastic design. Other suggested improvements include a fingerprint sensor and a redesigned TouchWiz UI called as the Magazine UI.

Although the S5 will feature a lot of improvements over its predecessor, the company has assured that the price of the device won’t be hiked significantly. Reports suggest that the company has found out ways to cut costs in the manufacturing process which will keep down the prices to the current level. Also, the company officials hinted that the device will hit the markets by April along with the next version of the Galaxy Gear Watch. However, given that the launch may happen this month itself, one can expect to get the device as early as March.
