Yes, in case you didn’t hear, Gear S does not need a companion smartphone to work as it comes with its own cellular radio. So, it can make and receive calls, browse internet and do a lot of functions without connecting to your phone.
Surprisingly, the device runs on Tizen instead of Android Wear from Google. Samsung had showed off a smartwatch with Android Wear a few months back, but that was just a basic device with not many special functions. On the other hand, the company released two new smartwatches running on Tizen earlier this year, which makes this the third one in 2014.
Google was reportedly unhappy with Samsung’s focus on Tizen for its smartwatches and this new release won’t help at all. In fact, it is said that Samsung is even planning to release a smartphone with Tizen later this year.
But for those who won’t mind Tizen on their wrists, Gear S looks like a great device. It will hit all major carriers in the country, which means you can add the device to the existing plan on your own network.
Samsung said that Gear S will be available on three major carriers in the country namely Verizon, AT&T and T Mobile. While Verizon and T Mobile have not revealed anything about the launch of the device, AT&T has come forward to say that Gear S will be available in its retail outlets from September 26.
Gear S is an interesting device because it comes with a lot of advanced features. First of all, you’ll notice that it has a curved screen. While many other smartwatches comes with curved screens these days, the display on the device is much larger than its competitors. You get a lot of real estate which makes navigation and other operations a lot easier.
As for the hardware, it comes with a 1.0 GHz Dual Core processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB ROM. You also get a heart rate sensor on the device, but it’s nothing new as the earlier released Gear smartwatches had this sensor.
In short, if you are looking for a device which can replace your smartphone (at least to some extent); Samsung Gear S is your answer.
