Samsung Galaxy Alpha metal smartphone finally official

Samsung Galaxy Alpha metal smartphone finally officialFor the past few months we have been hearing a lot about a possible metal smartphone from Samsung called the Galaxy Alpha. Looks like these rumors were right indeed as the company today officially announced its first metal smartphone in the Galaxy lineup called as the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

While rumors said that the phone would be named Alpha, we thought that was just a prototype name. But for some reason Samsung went with the same name for the final product too.

The South Korean giant did not announce the device with much fanfare like it normally does with other Galaxy smartphones. In fact, today’s announcement did not have any special launch events or even a big speech from one of its top executives; instead the company went with a very low profile launch.

Samsung didn’t even specify whether the phone was a flagship device, but looking at the specifications, we don’t think the company is branding it as a high end phone.

The design is its most striking feature. Galaxy Alpha sports a design that we have not yet seen on any other smartphone from the company. It comes with a metal construction which gives it a premium feel like a flagship device. The metal frame is sandwiched between the textured front and back of the phone. Also, the sides are smooth and polished which frankly makes it even more attractive.

However, apart from the striking looks, the phone’s pretty much mid-range. Alpha comes with a 4.7 inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This is very disappointing given that most flagships come with at least 1080p displays, if not Quad HD resolution like the LG G3. There’s 2GB RAM onboard with 32GB internal storage, which unfortunately cannot be expanded via a MicroSD card. Galaxy smartphones usually come with a memory slot, but this new metal frame may have forced the company to remove it.

On the back, there’s a 12MP shooter, while on the front there’s a 2.1MP camera. The device runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat out of the box and will come features like fingerprint sensor and Ultra Power saving mode. Unfortunately, Alpha won’t be water resistant like S5 and will come with a smaller battery too.

Galaxy Alpha will come in black, white, silver, gold and blue colors, but the availability will depend on the individual market. Samsung is yet to reveal its pricing but a company official said that it would be cheaper than Galaxy S5.
