Whether you missed out on the SAG Awards 2016 or you would just like to reminisce, this is the place for you! Saturday night was a big night for some film and television celebrities as they received trophies for their outstanding performances in 2015.

Let’s have a look-back on the top 5 highlights from the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Highlight 1: Double Victory For Idris Elba

Idris Elba won big at the SAG Awards 2016 with two trophies recognizing his performances both on the big screen and on television. The 43-year-old British performer is the first male actor to receive two awards in one night.

His performance on Beast of No Nation garnered him the award for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role award while his role in Luther won him the trophy for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie of Miniseries.

Highlight 2: Extended Winning Streak For Leonardo DiCaprio

An Oscars trophy might be very elusive for Leo, but the actor continues to receive acclaim from other award giving bodies. During the SAG Awards 2016, the 41-year-old actor won an award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for The Renevant.

In DiCaprio’s acceptance speech, he shared his motivation for becoming an excellent actor. “When I was 15 years old, I was lucky enough to get a film called ‘This Boy’s Life’ and for about a year after that I watched as many films as I possibly could from Jimmy Cagney all the way to Robert De Niro,” he said before the crowd.

“It gave me such a tremendous respect for this craft, this craft of acting. I was in awe of their performances, and I was incredibly inspired. So for any young actors out there, I encourage you to watch the history of cinema because as the history of cinema unfolds, you realize that we all stand on the shoulders of giants,” DiCaprio added.

Highlight 3: Diversity-Friendly

The SAG Awards 2016 was seen as a breath of fresh air amidst the controversy over this year’s Oscars, where nominees were all white. Apart from Idris Elba, other people of color such as Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black, Queen Latifah of Bessie, and Viola Davis of How to Get Away with Murder were big winners that night.

Laura Prepon, who won the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble award for Orange is the New Black, lauded the body for being all-inclusive. “Look at this stage,” she told the crowd. “This is what we talk about when we talk about diversity: different race, color, creed and sexual orientation.”

Highlight 4: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Humor

If the Tony’s and Oscars have Neil Patrick Harris, SAG Awards 2016 found gold in the tandem of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Their partnership while presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award winner Carol Burnett was laughter-filled.

The crowd continuously laughed when Fey spoke of Burnett. “She has deserved every award because comedy is harder than drama. Because comedic actors have to do everything dramatic actors do, but faster. And often with a chimp,” she joked.

Poehler also brought in DiCaprio in their act. “And while we’re at it, let’s all calm down about Leonardo DiCaprio and his hard work on ‘The Revenant.’ So you slept in a horse and ate bison liver. Big whoop. Carol would have slept in that horse, worn it, done a song and dance, and made a much funnier face after eating something disgusting,” she added.

Highlight 5: Michael Keaton’s Acceptance Speech

Michael Keaton and his team won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award. Amidst all the celebrations, Keaton expressed that their award was dedicated to the “powerless.”

“For me personally … this is really for the disenfranchised everywhere. This is for every Flint, Michigan, in the world. This is for the powerless. This is for the powerful who take advantage of the powerless,” he said. “That’s why I’m proud to be part of this and thank you very much, it comes down to two things: There’s fair and there’s unfair, and I’m always going to vote for the fair, I’m always going to vote for the good guys.”

Their movie, Spotlight, is about an investigation conducted by the Boston Globe into the sex scandals involving Catholic Church priests.
