Rita Ora Vs. Rihanna: X Factor Judge Says Rihanna Has Been Sabotaging Her Career

Could Rihanna have it out for Rita Ora? Some reports say this is so, claiming Rihanna used her influence in their label Roc Nation to sabotage Rita Ora’s career.

Earlier this month, recording artist and X Factor judge Rita Ora launched legal action against Roc Nation, claiming the label — owned by rapper Jay Z —abandoned her in lieu of prioritizing other projects, such as sports management and other endeavors — like streaming service Tidal, for example. Ora has only released one album despite being signed to Roc Nation since 2008.

“When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist,” the complaint states. “As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita’s remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company.”

Furthermore, according to the lawsuit, Ora was left behind at Sony, following Roc Nation’s switch in distribution partner from Sony to Universal in 2013. The complaint continues, “Between Sony’s limited economic return from its orphaned relationship with Roc Nation and Sony’s indirect relationship with Rita, Rita is caught in a political quagmire of dysfunction.”

Ora claims she is now independently supporting her own projects, “self-funding her promotional television appearances, recording costs and video projects.” The complaint — made on Ora’s behalf by attorney Howard King, states, “Rita’s relationship with Roc Nation is irrevocably damaged.”

But that’s not the only thing that’s been “irrevocably damaged” — sources say fellow label-mate Rihanna was behind Roc Nation’s abandoning Ora, using her influence to ensure the latter’s career was not treated as a priority.

Allegedly, Rihanna has the first word when it comes to releasing new songs. “Rihanna has never liked Rita and has been using her power at Roc Nation accordingly,” shared one source. “This is the main reason the label’s execs have been uninterested in putting effort into promoting Rita.”

“Songs that might be submitted to her are automatically given to Rihanna, who may then hold them for months before deciding she doesn’t want them.” The source went on to reveal that Ora’s ex-boyfriend, Calvin Harris — who is now dating Taylor Swift — had also played a role in her leaving the company.

“The fact that Rita’s ex Calvin Harris is on their management books hasn’t helped either,” the source continued. “He is one of their highest earners and they did nothing to stop him when he blocked Rita from using songs that he had written on her album.”
