Your chosen Pokemon buddy will walk around with you and be seen on the map. By traveling with it at a certain distance, you can receive rewards.

How To Get Candy Rewards

As per Niantic’s Facebook post, it appears that the rewards will be candy. Just like waiting for eggs to hatch by achieving a required distance (kilometer), the candy reward will give you a new creature!

As to how many candies and what specific Pokemon creature each player will get for a certain kilometer, one user posted a chart online to help fellow trainers.
