In 2011, the Philippine government announced the beginning of the implementation of a new school system: The K12 curriculum. Over the last few years, more and more schools have been overhauling the design of their curriculum to embrace the K12 system which adds an additional 2 years of schooling to the basic education system.

The K12 Curriculum means more than just adding on a couple of extra years to your child’s schooling, however. Here’s what you need to know about how it will affect your children and their education.

What was formerly known as simply ‘High School’ will now be divided into ‘Junior High School’, which will include grades 7-10, and ‘Senior High School’, which includes grades 11 and 12. As of 2016, Senior High School will become mandatory for those wishing to enter colleges and universities.

While some may think that tacking on another 2 years of basic education is pointless, you’ll find that it will actually prove to be a great benefit for your child’s education. Most countries around the world have been practicing the K12 Curriculum for many decades, and there is good reason for it.

The biggest changes seen in the new K12 Curriculum will be seen in the Senior High School years. During grades 11 and 12, students will be offered different electives, or specialization classes, that will help them to develop skills that are according to the focus they will have after completing basic education.

Elective options will include academic studies for those preparing to attend universities, vocational or trade skills to help those who will be seeking employment immediately after high school, and even arts and sports electives for those who are inclined to take them up.

These electives will give a significant edge to students, whatever their goals in life may be, allowing each student to tailor his or her education to their individual needs.

In addition, the current 10-year basic education system is seen as deficient for many reasons. The Department of Education has called the 10-year system “a congested curriculum” because “12 year[s of] curriculum is being delivered in 10 years”.

The newly introduced K12 Curriculum will allow students to enter the workforce, not only better equipped educationally, but also with the emotional maturity needed to handle the prospect of employment.

For those whose children will be affected by the new K12 educational overhaul, it will be beneficial to sit down and talk with your children about the aforementioned benefits.

Show them that the 2 additional years of schooling will be used to personalize their education and build a better foundation for their future employment. The K12 Curriculum should be embraced, not feared or dreaded.
