Nokia X Android powered smartphone may release as early as this March

Nokia’s secret project, Normandy X Android powered smartphone has been making its rounds on the internet over the past few weeks. Several images as well as the specs have been leaked which portray the phone as a budget mid-range device.

Since the first few leaks, via EvLeaks on twitter, this particular project has been in the headlines of many major websites. The first image of the phone was released way back in November by evleaks on twitter after which there have been a number of images and benchmark leaks of the phone. According to several sources Normandy X will be called as the Nokia X and is planned to release sometime around the next few months.

The sources further reveal that Nokia will replace the existing low cost Asha devices with this Android powered Nokia X lineup. The Asha lineup, which was supposed to be the low cost smartphone alternative to Android, did not fare well in the market. The Symbian S40 series operating system could not offer the customizability or the functionality of the world’s largest operating system, which forced the company to adopt Android for their low cost devices.

However, Nokia X smartphones won’t be like the other traditional Android phones out there. Nokia is planning to customize the operating system on the phone to a considerable extent, just like Amazon did with its Kindle lineup. The phone won’t be Google certified, so won’t feature the traditional play store. However, reports claim that Nokia will have its own app store for the device and will also allow users to side load apps.

Along with the image leaks, some of the specs of the phone too have been revealed. According to rumors, Nokia X will feature a 4 inch WVGA display, dual core Snapdragon 200 processor along with a 5MP camera and 4GB storage. It will also feature dual-sim slots and will be available in six different colors. The phone will run the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat version but will be highly customized with Nokia apps. Even several benchmark results have cropped up online which puts the device somewhere in the mid-range segment along the likes of Xperia C.

While many of the leaks lack credibility, a popular Vietnamese Online retailer just recently posted the listing of the phone with Nokia’s own skin over Android. However, apart from the specs and the image, the retailer did not reveal the pricing or the availability of the phone.

However, according to a Senior Executive at Nokia India, Nokia X is scheduled to release this March alongside its Asha lineup.
