National Coming Out Day: Read These Heartbreaking Coming Out Stories

National Coming Out Day is an annual civil awareness day that is internationally observed on October 11. This year, many people worldwide expressed their pride and support for this commemoration, turning to social media and trending the #NationalComingOutDay tag on the Internet.

In spite of the overflowing positivity on social media, not everyone could bask in favorable outcomes.

Recently, a video showed people reading anonymous coming out stories ala Jimmy Kimmel’s Celebrities Read Mean Tweets. However, instead of humor or sarcasm, the confessions shared were heartbreaking and emotional.

Many of the stories shared themes of reluctance to come out in fear of rejection.

“I know that if I come out, my family and many of the people I’ve grown up with will disown me,” one person wrote.

“I haven’t come out yet because it scares me,” said another. “I care a lot about what people think about me.”

One anonymous individual wrote, “I just wish I could come out without being scared of my identity being valid to some people.”

Other stories included someone’s strong desire to wear dresses, and how their spirits were shot down by the people around them for showing even the slightest inkling of what society deemed to be ‘inappropriate’ for their gender. Some had no intentions of coming out in sheer terror of what it could do to their relationship with their family.

“I’ve never been so terrified of my own family,” one person admitted. “I’ll never come out, not for lack of wanting to. But because if I do, I’ll lose my family.”

The term ‘coming out’ refers to the process of an individual in the LGBTQ+ community personally accepting their sexuality and/or gender identity and disclosing it to their family and peers. Coming out is an experience that is different for everybody, and due to the pressures of society and inconsistent outcomes of coming out, many have shied away from coming to terms with themselves.
