LG recently unveiled its second Android Wear smartwatch, LG G Watch R at IFA Berlin. This move was rather surprising given that the company had released a wearable device only a few months back running on the same software.
But like the name suggests, the LG’s latest wearable is a round smartwatch, just like the Moto 360, which makes us wonder whether the company had been planning such a launch all this time. Motorola’s popular Moto 360 smartwatch is not yet official and is still not available for purchase, so even though this might not be LG’s first smartwatch, the company could make up for the lack of popularity of the G Watch with this new round face one.
LG claims that it was working on this round smartwatch for over two years now. The company initially experimented with a ‘neutral design’ but knew that it had to do much more in terms of design to attract consumers.
Although G Watch R comes with a smaller screen than the Moto 360, it does look a bit bigger thanks to its extra 2-3mm on the sides placed to waterproof the device.
Apparently, LG G Watch R is the first true round Android Wear smartwatch in the market as Motorola’s Moto 360 had a small bar at the bottom which spoiled its round design. LG’s new watch comes with a 320 x 320 pixel resolution 1.3 diameter POLED screen. The screen supports 100% color gamut and is bright enough to be visible in daylight. On the other hand, Moto 360 comes with a larger 1.5 inch screen but only with a 320 x 290 pixel resolution. However, Moto 360 does have Gorilla Glass 3 protection which the G Watch R lacks.
Unfortunately, LG has not bumped up the specifications as compared to its first device, so you get the same Snapdragon 400 processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. You also get Bluetooth, sensors like Barometer, 9axis accelerometer and a microphone. The device is also waterproof as it comes with IP67 certification. LG has included a 400 mAh battery on new watch, but has not yet revealed how much run time you’ll get with it.
From the specifications point of view, Moto 360 and G Watch R will fare more or less the same. The design too is similar, with LG going with a more traditional analog watch design. So, people who love the traditional design may prefer G Watch R.
However, design isn’t the only thing that affects consumer’s choice. Pricing will also be a big factor. Moto 360 is expected to be priced around $250, which to be frank is a good deal. On the other hand, a recent leak from LG Germany puts the device just around the $400 price mark, which is much more than what most consumers are willing to pay for a watch.
Both the devices are not officially priced as of now, so we’ll wait for a few more weeks before we get to know how much we’ll have to shell out to get each one.
