Mockingjay Part 2: Biggest Box Office Flop For Hunger Games Franchise

The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2 might have been long awaited by fans around the world, but its box office earnings seem to have fallen flat of expectations.

The final film in The Hunger Games franchise topped the box office with $101 million in the U.S., a 17 percent decline from its initial sales for The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1. It beat that of the latest James Bond instalment, Spectre, which pulled in $14.6 million in its third week of release in the U.S, making a total of $153.7 million in North America.

Lionsgate reportedly spent roughly $160 million to make The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2; the movie series as a whole has brought in over $1.1 billion in the U.S. since its 2012 debut. Additionally, it helped launch Jennifer Lawrence — who plays the series heroine, Katniss Everdeen — into one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today.

Some box office analysts speculate the recent terrorist attacks overseas may have affected the movie’s sales, as some Americans might be less likely to visit theaters as of late. Others claim it could be franchise fatigue, with The Hunger Games series reaching its tail end of shelf life.

The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2 might not have met targets that its predecessors had previously reached, but it was still received with popular success among moviegoers, hitting the mark with an average rating of A- on CinemaScore.

Paul Dergarabredian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, shares, “The Hunger Games series has stood as proof that, if properly handled, new massive brands can be created and can draw audiences around the world.”

What’s next for Jennifer Lawrence and her co-stars now? Do you think The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2 was worth all the hype, or did it flop for you as well?
