Miss Universe 2015 Winner: Steve Harvey, Miss Philippines And Miss Colombia Finally Speak Out

The Miss Universe 2015 crowning will definitely go down in history for being one of the most memorable — albeit controversial — pageant finales yet, considering the Miss Universe crown was accidentally handed to the wrong contestant.

In a mix up, host Steve Harvey accidentally crowned Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as Miss Universe 2015, only for him to correct himself — to everyone’s surprise — a few moments later, claiming it was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who was the true winner. The crown and title were consequently revoked from Miss Colombia and were awkwardly handed to Miss Philippines.

Netizens and celebrities expressed their shock over the sudden turn of events, with the hashtag #MissUniverse2015 trending worldwide on Twitter, pulling in nearly four million tweets in a span of just four hours.

For his mistake, Harvey has since made a public apology on Twitter, writing, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible. Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake. I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing.”

He also took to Facebook to express his deepest apologies, writing, “I made a terrible mistake tonight in announcing the wrong winner and runner-up for the Miss Universe pageant. I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. I hope that you can forgive me.”

“All contestants were amazing but I want to specifically apologize to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines again and wholeheartedly. You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves.”

Harvey was also seen approaching Wurtzbach backstage to deliver a personal apology. Furthermore, Miss Universe likewise issued their own apologetic statement, saying, “Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced.”

“Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia, Miss Universe Philippines, their families and fans,” the statement continued. “We congratulate Miss Universe Philippines as Miss Universe 2015.”

On having her crown literally taken away from her, Miss Colombia said, “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy.” She also thanked her supporters for voting for her.

Meanwhile, Miss Philippines was spotted teary-eyed with 2nd runner-up, Miss USA Olivia Jordan. Of her surprise win, she said, “It’s a very non-traditional crowning moment, isn’t it? It’s very… very 2015.”
