Miss Puerto Rico Suspended From Miss America After Sending Racist Anti-Muslim Tweets

The whole Miss Universe 2015 shebang may be the talk of the town, but another beauty queen from a different pageant is making waves — this time for some discriminating comments. Destiny Velez, who represented her country as Miss Puerto Rico in this year’s Miss America competition, may have ended her beauty pageant career in just a few simple tweets.

Following U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban all Muslims from entering the country, director Michael Moore posted a picture on the Internet advocating for Muslims, with the statement “We Are All Muslim” accompanying the post. However, Velez had other things to say, beginning her rant on social media with, “Islamic god is NOT the same God of the Christians & Jews.”

“Muslims use our constitution to terrorize USA & plant gas stations,” she continued. “There’s NO comparison between Jews, Christians & Muslims. Jews nor Christians have terrorizing agendas in their sacred books. All what Muslims have done is provided oil & terrorize this country & many others!!!!!!”

Needless to say, Velez’s harsh statements were received with just as much criticism. In addition to offending the Muslim community, Velez also sparked an outrage from her native country, with her fellow Puerto Ricans calling her out with the hashtag “nonorepresentas,” which translates to “you don’t represent us.”

Furthermore, the official Miss America Organization — after finding out about Velez’s tweets, released a statement on December 19, declaring Miss Puerto Rico was suspended indefinitely, as her words “do not represent the integrity and esteem of our program, nor that of our board members, our sponsors and partners, or the National Organization.”

Following the suspension, Velez has since deleted her social media accounts, but not before releasing a statement of her own: “I apologize to the people I have offended with my words. I am first and foremost an #UpStander and as such I stand up against bullying. The last ting I wanted to do was to bully anyone. Again, I apologize to anyone who felt offended with my words.”
