A group of Chinese stewardesses have firmly put their feet down to being stowed away in the overhead cabins as part of the company’s employee ritual.

According to some stewardesses of Kunming Airlines, they were ‘forced’ to go through celebratory initiation rites of being squeezed into the crampy overhead cabins of the airplane after their first 30 to 50 hours as new hires of the airline company. The male safety officers were in charge of stowing them away.

Several stewardesses have complained about the ritual, getting the ire of other employees for doing so. Some of them have been labeled as ‘cocky’ for not wanting to join in on the fun. Other stewardesses however, just go with the flow even if they do not like the idea for fear of being edged out or ridiculed by the more senior staff.

Information surrounding the ritual came to light in an article that went viral via social media last Sunday.

According to the article, there were employees who already filed complaints with the company. Unfortunately, they fell on deaf ears as the ritual has been practiced for the past five years. There was no response to any of the complaints until the article had gone viral, and the Kunming Airlines’ executives had to finally issue a comment last Monday.

The airline company claimed that their executives did not receive any complaints from the staff nor were they aware that such a thing was going on. According to them, the stuffing of the stewardess into the overhead cabin was an isolated incident and happened only when there were no passengers in the aircraft. It did not affect the safety of the passengers in any way.

They also issued a statement saying that the upper management shall look into the matter and educate their staff, as well as ensure that the incident shall not happen again.

Stowing away of stewardesses into the overhead cabins is reported to be a trend in international airlines, with photos of some stewardesses posing gamely for the camera while they were cramped in the overhead cabin going viral.
