Katy Perry Overtakes Justin Bieber as World’s Most Followed Twitter User

Katy Perry World’s Most Followed Twitter UserSinger and songwriter Katy Perry is now the most followed Twitter user worldwide. The 29-year-old recording superstar has just taken the crown from the 19-year-old Canadian pop icon Justin Bieber, who in turn had kept his reign in the micro blogging site for nine months.

Many analysts think that Perry’s Twitter account could be enjoying the boost from the buzz circulating her latest studio album ‘Prism.’ They believe the new CD could be bolstering her visibility especially across the social media. She is expected to soon hit the grand 50-million mark in terms of Twitter followers.

But some people are hesitant about that explanation, noting that Perry has not been posting tweets since October 31. In comparison, Bieber has remained very active on the Website especially these days when he is using the social platform to promote his current concert tour. Thus, we may expect Perry’s profile to get more action when she comes back online.

Top 5 Twitter profiles

Based on figures as of November 4, Perry’s Twitter account has 46,534,966 followers. Bieber has a total of 46,510,838 followers. On the third spot is Lady Gaga, who is getting past behind with 40.4 million Twitter followers. The fourth most popular Twitter user to date is US President Barack Obama with 39.27 million followers, while country music recording artist Taylor Swift completes the top 5 with 36.25 million followers.

It could be noted that musicians are still the most popular users in the Twitter universe. Lady Gaga was the queen of Twitter for three long years before Bieber dominated the site in January this year. According to observers, Twitter history has it that once a user is leap-frogged on the No. 1 position, that person may never win it back again.

Growing social media base

It is also interesting how Twitter has become more popular through the years. Back in 2009, the battle for the most popular user of the site was fought by CNN, actor Ashton Kutcher, and pop icon Britney Spears. Their race was about whose account would be the first ever to generate over 1 million followers. Kutcher won the crown.

Interestingly, Perry, Bieber, and Lady Gaga are equally popular in Facebook. In that social networking site, Lady Gaga remains as the most popular user with 60.35 million ‘likes.’ Perry’s official fan page has 59.25 million likes, while Bieber has 57.27 million likes.
