“I think it was strategy on their part because my release date was first.”
In a recent interview with New Zealand radio station, The Edge, Justin Bieber slammed British boy band One Direction, implying that they were riding his coattails by copying the release date of his upcoming fourth album, Purpose.
The Canadian singer claimed that Simon Cowell’s most successful act was trying to steal the spotlight by purposely scheduling the release date of their fifth studio album with his.
More shots were fired when Bieber reinforced rumors of his feud with the UK boy band by posting a video — one that had snarky undertones — on Snapchat last Tuesday.
“The face you make when you come out with an album on the same day as Justin Bieber,” he said, closing the video with a grimace.
This only prompted a quick retort from One Direction’s Niall Horan as he shot back with his own sassy Snapchat video.
“That face you pull when you’re playing the last night at the O2,” he said before pulling a similar expression to that of Bieber’s.
Made In The A.M. will be One Direction’s fifth and final album before taking an extended hiatus in March 2016. The announcement of the hiatus followed rumors of the band breaking up, though Horan and fellow member Louis Tomlinson clarified and reassured fans that the group wasn’t going anywhere.
While Directioners expressed their meltdowns on social media, news of the break did not come as too much of a surprise as the members of One Direction have previously expressed an interest in pursuing solo projects. This is also an opportunity for the boys to take a well-deserved break after releasing several albums year after year ever since their debut in 2011.
While the group has already announced their upcoming album, Bieber has only given inklings of what his album name may be via vague Instagram posts.
Both artist’s forthcoming albums are set for release on November 13.
