Jeremy Lin Suicidal? Hornets Player Posts About Stress And Suicide On Facebook

Jeremy Lin came from obscurity in NBA and now currently enjoys one of his better seasons as a member of the Charlotte Hornets. Lin exploded into the NBA consciousness during his stint with the New York Knicks where Linsanity mania was born.

He worked hard for it. It was a trying time to crack an NBA roster when he went undrafted in the 2010 NBA Draft out of Harvard. Lin was not new to this kind of situation though. He recalls his high school struggles in his December 8 post in his Facebook account.

There was a lot of pressure to succeed in Palo Alto High School, he said. An Atlantic article about the high number of suicide incidents in Silicon Valley high schools prompted him to recount his own anxieties in high school.

He wrote on Facebook, “As someone who was raised in the Bay Area, I’ve always taken great pride in being from Palo Alto-the greatest city in the world, as far as I’m concerned.

Like many others, I read “The Silicon Valley Suicides” in this month’s Atlantic and it led me to reflect on my own experience at Palo Alto High School,” his Facebook read. He recalled being under tremendous pressure having too maintain a certain GPA – that would make or break his four years in high school.

“I distinctly remember being a freshman in high school, overwhelmed by the belief that my GPA over the next four years will make or break my life. My daily thought process was that every homework assignment, every project, every test could be the difference.”

He suffered from Sunday anxiety and was unable to sleep well, haunted by nightmares of him failing tests. The pressure came from everywhere- his parents, his peers, and himself. “I felt that I had one shot at high school and that my GPA, SAT score and college applications were the only barometers of my success”, he added.

In the report from rawstory.com, the American Foundation for Suicide Preventions lists a 10.9 per 100,000 people suicide rate among adolescents and young adults in 2013. In the last ten years, Silicon Valley’s suicide rate is between four to five times the national average.

Jeremy Lin is a success story, though. He survived high school with flying colors, played basketball for Harvard University and graduated with an Economics degree. He later on became the first Taiwanese-American basketball player in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors.
