Jennifer Lawrence Gives Her Two Cents On The Hollywood Pay Gap

It looks like Emma Watson is not the only female artist who decided to take up the cudgels, speak up and let their voice be heard. Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence has broken her silence over the significant pay gap between women and men in the film industry.

In a post for Lena Dunham’s ‘Lenny Letter’ newsletter entitled “Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?”, JLaw spoke about the Sony email hack issue that happened late last year.

In the essay, FHM Sexiest’s Lawrence, clarified that she was not mad at Sony but at herself. It would be remembered that a Sony email hack between the stars of the film American Hustle, of which she was part of, became viral last year.

The email revealed negotiations and discussion between the stars of the movie and Sony, and how Lawrence and co-star Amy Adams received less pay compared to the guys of the film. Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner each received nine per cent profit, while Lawrence and Adams received only seven per cent profit.

“When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with d***s, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I didn’t want to seem ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled,'” she said.

“At the time, that seemed like a fine idea, until I saw the payroll on the internet and realised every man I was working with definitely didn’t worry about being ‘difficult’ or ‘spoiled.'”

In the same newsletter, Lawrence also cited an incident when she gave her straightforward, “a clear and no-bullshit way; no aggression, just blunt” way and the man reacted “as if I was yelling at him”.

“All I hear and see all day are men speaking their opinions, and I give mine in the same exact manner, and you would’ve thought I had said something offensive.”

She went on to say, “I’m over trying to find the ‘adorable’ way to state my opinion and still be likable. F**k that… I don’t think I’ve ever worked for a man in charge who spent time contemplating what angle he should use to have his voice heard.”

Lawrence’s comments come just after the release of the Forbes Magazine’s annual list of highest earning female movie stars, of which she topped.
