As we near the official announcement period, rumors and leaks about iPhone 6 is flooding the internet. We have already seen the upcoming iPhone’s sapphire glass being tested on video and if Apple does incorporate the same display, then you would have a hard time getting any scratches on the device.
However, according to a latest report, iPhone 6 with sapphire display will only be available in limited quantities when it launches in the market.
Trendforce, an analyst group believes that the sapphire display model of the iPhone will only retail in limited quantities at first.
In a press release published yesterday, the company said the following,
“The sapphire glass version iPhone 6 will be issued in limited volumes this year, mostly because sapphire ingot manufacturers yield rates were lower than forecasts and there were issues involved in sapphire glass processing.”
So, if this report turns out to be true, you will most likely see a traditional glass display on at least one of the versions of iPhone 6. According to Trendforce, their contacts in the industry say that there is very less demand for glass covers for smartphones. Further as mentioned in the report, issues in the production of the display may have led Apple to this decision.
However, Apple has not yet confirmed Sapphire glass on its next model. So, it’s not even sure whether there would be an iPhone 6 model with this hard display cover. Also, this report relies on the rumor that there would be two different versions of iPhone 6.
Over the past few months, various leaks have suggested that Apple would increase the screen size of its upcoming iPhone and will also release two different screen size variants of the device. If the rumors are to be believed, then there would be a 4.7 inch version and a 5.5 inch version of the device. Also, if this turns out to be true, the sapphire glass version would probably be the larger 5.5 inch version.
Limited stock is something that consumers always hate. Last year’s iPhone 5S too faced supply shortages, especially the gold colored version and we were hoping that something like that didn’t happen this year.
However, a recent report from WSJ said that Apple has ordered around 70 80 million iPhone 6 units this year (split between the two versions), which is way more than previous year’s order. So, even if the Sapphire display model is available in limited quantities, you should be able to order the other version easily.
