Earlier this year, we received several rumors which suggested that Google was scrapping the Android Nexus program. Even one of LG’s executives said that the company did not have a Nexus device under their belt. So, many wondered whether a Nexus device would make it to the market this year.
But according to Android Police’s sources, this year we would have at least one Nexus device and if the source turns out to be true, then one of those devices would be the rumored HTC Volantis tablet or the Nexus 9.
As the name suggests, the device would be bigger than its predecessors at 8.9 inches and would probably be the last tablet in the Nexus program. Earlier reports said that the first Android Silver device would release by 2015, so it’s quite likely that after this release, Google would shut down the Nexus program.
Coming to the leaked specifications, the Nexus 9 would feature an 8.9 inch screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1440 pixels. So, the pixel density of the screen would be around 281 PPI which is slightly better than Apple’s retina display which has a pixel density of 264 PPI. The odd resolution would also mean an aspect ratio of around 4:3, which is quite different than the 16:10 aspect ratio found on earlier Nexus tablets.
Nexus 9 would run NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 64 bit processor which should be clocked at the default speed of 2.5Ghz. For memory, there would be 2GB RAM and 8GB/ 16GB internal storage options. The spec sheet further reveals that there will be an 8 MP OIS shooter on the back and a 3MP camera on the front of the tablet.
Like HTC’s flagship device, the Nexus 9 too is said to come with a metal body. To be precise, the source states that the tablet would feature Aluminum Zero Gap construction. As for the dimensions, the tablet would measure 8.91″x5.98″x0.31″ and will weigh 418 grams (427 grams for LTE).
As you can see, HTC Volantis would be bigger and thicker than the previous generation. However, we are sure that won’t bother most of the users as they get a premium aluminum construction for the slightly bulky size.
The source also revealed the potential price tag the device. The 16GB one would cost around $399 while the 32 GB one would retail for $499. LTE model would cost much more and is expected to sell at a premium rate of $600.
Nexus 9 could be announced anytime in the fourth quarter of 2014, so stay tuned for more leaks and updates on the device.
