2014 is without any doubt, the year of the wearables and looks like HTC is not going to stay behind when its competitors are busy developing one for the market. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, HTC’s Chairwoman, Cher Wang revealed that the company would release a wearable like a smartwatch as soon as this holiday season.
For the past two years, the company has suffered in terms of sales and revenue and the last time it posted an increase was way back in 2011. However, the company CEO, Chang Chialin feels that this year will be positive for the company as compared to 2013. This can be because of the possible release of the wearable in addition to the increased marketing budget and the release of the successor to the HTC One.
But the road to a product like a wearable is never easy. According to Wang, the company has faced problems with the development of the device in many areas like the battery and the display. While this is an issue faced by all the manufacturers of wearable; Samsung, Nike etc. have already launched their own devices in the market. Even recent rumors suggest a possible release of the iWatch in the latter half of 2014. So, the company will have to time the launch to perfection if it hopes to see the revenue grow this year.
“Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems,” Wang said in the interview with Bloomberg. “These are customer-centric problems.”
Wang further added that after years of technical challenges and difficulties in development, a wearable device will be made available by the holiday season of 2014. However, she failed to give any more details like the market it is aimed for and whether it would be a smartwatch, smart wrist band or even a smart ring.
She also said that the company would be making changes in its marketing policy after last year’s marketing efforts for the HTC One was not as successful as expected. The company will not only increase the budget but also invest it smartly to produce the best possible results.
“It’s really not only the budget increase; it’s the way how you spend the money. Is it smart?” she said. “There’s a lot of ways to reach the audience right now”.
With the renewed marketing efforts for the upcoming HTC One and the launch of the wearable later this year, HTC hopes to increase its revenue as well as profits in 2014.
