HTC One named the best smartphone, iPad Air the best tablet at MWC 2014

At Mobile World Congress, it is a usual tradition for manufacturers to showcase their best products for the year; however, there is one more interesting thing that the event is known for .i.e. its annual Global Mobile Awards. Over 175 experts in the field along with analysts and journalists come together to nominate a winner for various categories. Some of them include the Most Innovative Device Manufacturer of the year, Best Smartphone of the year etc. However, given that only products launched before November 29, 2013 are taken into account for these awards, only the products launched last year receive them.

Starting off with the most awaited result, the Best Smartphone of the year went to HTC One. This breaks the winning streak of Samsung’s Galaxy series devices as Galaxy SII got the award in 2012 followed by SIII last year.  According to the judging panel, HTC was chosen as the best smartphone because it stood out from the competition, with a great design and an excellent user interface.

Nokia bagged two awards in the event, one for the best entry level handset category and the other for the best low cost smartphone category. While both of them sound quite similar, Nokia’s Lumia 520, which is a budget device, bagged the best low cost smartphone award and the entry level Nokia 105 won in the best feature phone category.

The Most Innovative Manufacturer of the Year award went to LG, which was another blow for Samsung as last year Samsung was the winner of the category.  However, LG’s G Flex Smartphone seemed to impress the judges better than Samsung’s Galaxy Round.

The Best Tablet award was bagged by Apple’s iPad Air. The thinner and the stylish profile of the new tablet made it the best tablet of the year. Other nominees in this category were Asus Nexus 7 2013, Sony’s Xperia Z tablet and Apple’s iPad Mini 2.

There were plenty of other categories too, like the Best Mobile Enabled Consumer Electronic device award which was won by FiLiP wearable locator for kids, Best Entertainment app which was won by Device 6, and Most Innovative App award which was bagged by CamMe.

These were just the awards for last year’s products and the awards for MWC 2014’s best devices will be announced tomorrow which will conclude the event. There are plenty of new products which have been announced at MWC this year, so the competition should be stiff.
