Most fans of the Harry Potter world are rejoicing upon learning that the saga will continue in the form of the upcoming play entitled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” Not everyone is happy with the casting choices, though, particularly since it was revealed that a black actress will be portraying Hermione.

Swaziland-born actress Noma Dumezweni has been cast for the role of the clever character Hermione, but fans of the magical series all over are speaking out against it. People are livid that the character they grew up with is going to be portrayed by a black actress even claiming to be offended by the choice.

“I’m offended by the casting of #CURSEDCHILD hermione is a white character. we may not make poc[people of color] characters white so white should not be poc,” said one fan on Twitter.

Other people are making a similar cry, claiming that Hermione was white in the movies, she was white in the books, so she should be white in the play too.

What people have failed to realize, however, is that J.K. Rowling, the author and creator of the Harry Potter world, never actually specified Hermione’s skin color.

In the Harry Potter books, Rowling pointed out, Hermione is described as having “brown eyes, frizzy hair, and [being] very clever. White skin was never specified.” All of the characteristics used to describe Hermione in the books could apply to a woman of color just as easily as it could apply to a white woman.

Furthermore, if people are going to use book descriptions of the characters as an excuse to make racist comments against Noma Dumezweni, why are they not complaining about the casting choices for Ron and Harry Potter himself as well? The actors chosen to portray the two male protagonists in the play don’t meet the exact descriptions of the characters in the books.

Paul Thornley, cast as Ron Weasley for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” lacks the tomato colored hair and splatter of freckles that Ron is described as having in the books. Jamie Parker, who will play Harry Potter, doesn’t have the black hair and green eyes that the character is known for. No one is stepping up to complain about these facts, though.

Even Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe, who played Ron and Harry in the movies, respectively, didn’t quite fit the character descriptions given by Rowling in her books.

In the end, though, people loved the casting and could hardly have pictured the movies with any other actors. So, why are people hating on the idea of Hermione being played by a black actress, when that doesn’t even conflict with the descriptions of her character in the Harry Potter books?
