GTA 5 has outperformed all expectations to become the best-selling game of 2013. The company behind the developer, Take Two Interactive confirmed the news in its financial statements released yesterday.
GTA V was released back in September, which was actually four months later than the original date given by the developers. However, that didn’t affect the sales of the game. Just within 24 hours of the release of the title, Take Two Interactive announced that the game managed to raise over $800 million. This made it the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company and the Grand Theft Auto series.
However, that was just the beginning as over the past few months, the sales figures have reached record breaking limits. Yesterday, the company announced that they sold over 32.5 million units till date. They also added that the GTA V finished as the best-selling game of 2013.
“Grand Theft Auto V finished as the best-selling video game of 2013,” an official Take-Two spokesperson said earlier.
With the sales driven by the robust demand for their bestselling titles like GTA V, NBA 2K14, WWE 2K14 and the revenue generated from the Grand Theft Auto Online, the company managed to record revenues of $767m up from $405m in the same quarter last year.
The company also announced that according to the NPD Group, a leading global market research company, Take-Two was the top video game publisher of 2013. NPD Group is the same company that released the sales figure (32.5m) for the GTA V title.
However, one thing to note here is that the title was released in the latter half of the year 2013 and was only available for Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles. So, the figure will naturally increase to a great extent this year as the company plans to make the title available to PC, Xbox One and PS4 later this year. Although Take Two Interactive has not yet officially announced a date for the new console release, analysts suggest that they could release it sometime around June this
Also, according to retailers like Amazon, Gameholds (UK), the PC version will be available soon. The Amazon website in Germany had listed the game for pre-order at 60 Euros but soon took down the listing. Gameholds too uploaded a similar listing and even mentions the shipping date as 31st March.
