It a common trend for manufacturers to release a mini version of their flagship devices and companies like HTC, Samsung as well as LG have been doing this for the past few years. While Samsung is yet to officially release a mini version of the well-known Galaxy S5 flagship, a recent leak reveals the upcoming Galaxy S5 mini along with its specifications.
The anonymous tipster has sent several pictures as well as AnTuTu and CPU-Z benchmarks to SamMobile, which reveals the overall specifications of the device. A few weeks back, the same website had leaked images of the so called Galaxy S5 mini, but at that time the specifications were not known. But this leak should give us an idea as to what to expect from the upcoming mini version of Galaxy S5.
Unlike earlier mini versions which came with very small displays, Samsung has smartly equipped the S5 mini with a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED panel. However the display is not 1080p like the S5, which is not surprising given the mini status but still at 720p resolution, images and videos should look sharp on the device.
The device will sport Samsung’s own Exynos 3 Quad Core SoC with cores clocked at 1.4 Ghz. For GPU, the SoC will come with a quad core Mali-400 MP4 graphics. For storage there’s 16GB internal memory along with 1.5 GB RAM. Samsung has also included a MicroSD card slot for additional storage.
Unlike the Galaxy S5 which came with a 16MP camera, Samsung has downgraded the camera on the mini version to 8MP. There’s also a 2.1MP shooter up front which is capable of recording 1080p videos like the rear camera.
Surprisingly, even without a flap cover for the USB port, Samsung has managed to make the device water and dust resistant. In fact, Galaxy S5 Mini is IP67 certified just like its elder brother.
Along with the usual connectivity features like Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC, LTE, IR Blaster and Bluetooth 4.0 LE, the device will have a heart rate sensor and a fingerprint sensor. These two sensors could be the selling point of the device as not many smartphones in the market come with a fingerprint and heart rate sensor.
On the software side, Galaxy S5 mini will run Android 4.4.2 Kitkat along with Samsung’s latest Touchwiz UI. All the special software features of the S5 would be integrated on the mini version too.
While these features look impressive, especially for a mini version of a flagship, the actual deciding factor would be the pricetag of the device. Also, the timing of the launch would be crucial for the success of the device.
As of now, the release date of the device is not known, but one can expect it to be announced anytime in the next few months.
