Popular comedian Eddie Murphy, famous for his movies Coming to America and The Nutty Professor series, chose not to reprise his impressions of Bill Cosby for Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary special because he felt that it was just very wrong to do so.

In a lengthy interview with the Washington Post on Tuesday, Murphy mentioned that he just did not want to joke about Bill Cosby’s sexual assault scandal.

“It’s horrible. There’s nothing funny about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. You’re hurting him. You’re hurting his accusers,” Murphy said of his refusal to reprise his Bill Cosby role.

He added, “I was like, ‘Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing,’”

Despite the humorous script, Murphy felt that it was just not the right timing to pursue the skit as the sexual assault scandal was quite the big issue back at the time.

With Murphy declining a reprise, the role of Bill Cosby went to SNL cast member Kenan Thompson instead. SNL writer Norm MacDonald explained in a series of tweets that the reason Murhpy declined to impersonate Cosby was because “he will not kick a man when he is down.”

On his end, Bill Cosby thanked and applauded Eddie Murphy for choosing not to impersonate him at the popular comedy show despite having the opportunity to do so.

Cosby, popular for the hit comedy TV series Cosby Show back in the 80s, is currently embattled in a sexual assault scandal. He has been accused of sexually assaulting over fifty women, including a 25 year old model who is the youngest in the list and claims to have been sexually assaulted by Cosby as a teenager.
