The wild is an unsafe place and some perils come at an unexpected time. A Colorado camp counselor found that out the hard way when he was awoken by a bear who dragged him by his head. The teen came out of the attack alive but he didn’t come out unscathed.
The Denver Channel reports that the police have located and killed the bear that attacked 19-year old Dylan in his sleep. The camp counselor was sound asleep in his sleeping bag at Glacier View Ranch when the bear dragged him by biting his head. Apparently, the teenager woke up to a “crunching noise,” which he believe is the noise of the bear’s “teeth scraping against the skull as it dug in.”
There were 12-13 year old campers who were sleeping nearby Dylan and the four other camp counselors when the attack happened. Fortunately, none of the other kids was harmed during the attack.
The Christian camp site located northwest of Boulder in the Town of Ward had staffers that tried to shoo the bear away, but the animal left on his own eventually.
The Colorado Park and Wildlife officials later told The Denver Channel that they’ve located and killed a 280-pound male bare on the Glacier View Ranch property and have taken care of the problem already. The bear was euthanized in fear of causing more harm to people. It’s likely that the bear attacked Dylan while it was looking for food to eat.
“It grabbed me like this and pulled me. Then it bit the back of my head and drug me,” said Dylan to The Denver Channel. The bear apparently dragged the teen 10 to 12 feet away from where he originally was before getting out of the bear’s jaws.
“I’m not afraid of the bears. I’m not afraid of sleeping outside anymore. You just have to be aware and respect the animals,” Dylan said after he was released from the hospital.
