Farook’s family and coworkers all expressed shock that this person that they thought they knew could be responsible for the California shooting tragedy. Farook’s brother-in-law, Farhan Khan, said “I cannot express how sad I am for what happened. I have no idea why he would do that. Why would he do something like this?”

While we don’t yet know the motives behind Farook’s California shooting spree, here are some facts that we do know about the man behind this tragic event that took many lives.

2. Farook’s mother had filed 3 separate restraining orders against his father.

Farook’s mother had repeatedly claimed that her husband was abusive to both her and her children and filed for restraining orders against him 3 separate times. She said that her husband was “throwing stuff, screaming, alcoholic, mentally sick and not on prescribed medication.” The first two restraining orders were granted to Rafia, however the third one was denied for unknown reasons.

3. Farook’s mother claimed that his father was mentally ill.

In addition to claims of abuse, alcoholism, and domestic violence, Syed Farook’s mother claimed that her husband was mentally ill. She sought to restrict Farook’s father from traveling with their kids to Pakistan.

After the restraining orders against Farook’s father were granted, his father was only allowed to visit his children with a monitor present. Syed Farook, who was 19 at the time, was given the court seal of approval to be the monitor during these visits.
