After British Labour Party politician and shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn delivered a stirring speech outlining why Britain should join the fight against ISIS and launch airstrikes against their Syrian stronghold, Britain’s Members of Parliament(MPs) overwhelmingly voted in favor the airstrikes and have officially joined the war on ISIS.

Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party, who has recently been branded as a ‘cheerleader’ for ‘angry, intolerant pacifism’due to his unwillingness to engage ISIS, apparently sat stony-faced throughout the speech as Benn made his case.

The debate lasted 11 hours, throughout which Corbyn was openly mocked by Labour MPs as they made their cases. Dame Margaret Beckett, Alan Johnson and Yvette Cooper were among the prominent figures who defied the Labour Party leader in support of David Cameron’s plans to bomb ISIS’ terrorists.

In barely concealed contempt for Corbyn and his anti-war supporters, Alan Johnson said “I wish I had frankly the self-righteous certitude of the finger-jabbing representatives of our new and kinder type of politics, who will no doubt soon be contacting those of us who support this motion tonight. But I believe that Isil, Daesh, has to be confronted and destroyed if we are to properly defend our country and our way of life and I believe that this motion provides the best way to achieve this objective.

It was Hilary Benn, however, who brought it home with his motivating speech. He pointed out that the terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris last month, leaving at least 130 dead and hundreds more injured, could have just as easily occurred in Britain as it did in France.

Benn went on to outline the atrocities of ISIS, highlighting that “we are here faced by fascists. Not just their calculated brutality but their belief that they are superior to every single one of us in this Chamber tonight and all of the people that we represent.”

Rallying those in attendance, Hilary Benn said of ISIS, “They hold us in contempt. They hold our values in contempt. They hold our belief in tolerance and decency in contempt. They hold our democracy, the means by which we will make our decision tonight, in contempt. We must now confront this evil. It is now time for us to do our bit in Syria. And that is why I ask my colleagues to vote for this motion tonight.”

After Benn’s speech, applause and cheering was heard from both the government and opposition benches. Then, it was time for the vote. At least 67 of Labour MPs are believed to have been swayed by Hilary Benn’s motivating speech and defied their pacifist leader Jeremy Corbyn to vote in favor of airstrikes against ISIS.

The MPs vote for airstrikes result was a 397 to 223 vote, with a majority of 174 in favor of the strikes. The Liberal Democrats and Democratic Unionist Party both backed the airstrikes, and UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron himself endorsed the decision, saying “I believe the House has taken the right decision to keep the UK safe.”

Hundreds of Tories also backed the decision, saying that the airstrikes against ISIS are “legal, necessary and the right thing to do to keep this country safe.”

Now, following the ‘yes’ vote, British fighter jets have already begun receiving orders to deploy war in Syria. Two Tornado warplanes and six Typhoon attack jets are set to depart from their British bases and travel to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. After this five hour journey, the planes will refuel and then proceed to territory occupied by the militants where they will double Britain’s war efforts in the fight against ISIS.

In addition, Tornado aircraft that are already operating over Iraq will be diverted into Syria to target ISIS jihadists in their heartland. Reaper drones that are already flying over Syria to spy on enemy positions are now enabled to take out ISIS targets with Hellfire missiles.

150 extra military personnel are expected to be deployed tomorrow morning as well, to step up the war effort. Royal Air Force officers are already buckling down and working with other military personnel to identify Syrian targets for the UK pilots to seek out.

A Tornado pilot who has already flown 2,000 hours over Iraq has made assurances that he and his fellow pilots were ready for these orders, saying they had already been prepared to deploy at 5 minutes notice. He went on to say that these new measures will even make their jobs easier, as they will no longer have to stop tracking enemy vehicles once they cross over the Syrian border.

When asked if he thought the new orders would make a difference in the war, the pilot said “Yes absolutely, definitely. It is clear that ISIS operate on both sides of the border. If we can go into Syria as well then I have no doubt that there will be targets for us to go against. It gives flexibility for ourselves and for the people directing us as well.”

A Tornado weapons system operator added that “There is very little difference for us in terms of a mindset change, going against the same people doing the same things across that line in the sand.”
