BlackBerry Updates OS; Adds FM Radio and Other Features

Who says BlackBerry Ltd is about to give up on its battle to take a turnaround? The Canadian smartphone manufacturer has just rolled out a software update that comes with new and exciting features, which could further turn specified BlackBerry devices into more interesting and helpful handsets.

One of the most notable and interesting new features that have been pushed by the operating system update is the built-in FM radio. The updated version of BlackBerry 10 would unlock the feature so that users could listen to top local stations even without using a network connection.

New features

BlackBerry 10.2.1 includes numerous refinements and enhancements. Those are expected to help make the use of the devices ‘faster and easier.’ In a statement, BlackBerry said the new features could bring about new uses particularly to BlackBerry Z30, Q5, and Q10 smartphones.

The latest OS update also brings about SMS and email groups, BlackBerry Hub custom pinch gestures, offline browser reading mode, modifiable lock screen notifications, automatic software updates, and device and battery monitoring system. Of course, there are many other features to be unlocked.

The company has posted the list of the OS updates online. BlackBerry 10 or BB10 version 10.2.1 is set to roll out not just in the US but also in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. Of course, it would also roll out in the company’s home market, Canada.

‘The way forward’

It could be recalled that BB10 was originally intended to help the device maker to reclaim its prominence as a smartphone maker. However, the updated OS along with a number of shiny new device models and about a hundred thousand apps have not been sufficient to bolster the economy.

In December, the company’s CEO, John Chen, underlined BlackBerry’s ‘way forward.’ He boosted the morale of his ‘talented team of leaders’ and insisted that the phone maker retain its status as a leader when it comes to mobile device management. He reiterated that BBM messaging service still remains as the most secure messaging app in the market today.

The market would have to see what this new update could do to help BlackBerry. The latest OS version is expected to be available soon, if it is not yet available in the specified markets. The company is also expected to roll it out on a global scale in the coming months.
