APEC 2015: China President Xi Jinping Confirms Attendance in Philippines

President of China, Xi Jinping, has confirmed his attendance at the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting on November 18 and 19 in Manila, Philippines. This comes amidst rising tensions between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea dispute.

“At the invitation of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III of the Republic of the Philippines, President Xi Jinping will attend the 23rd APEC Leaders Summit in the Philippines from November 17-19,” said a notice from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Earlier confirmed attendees of the summit were US President Obama and Russia President Vladimir Putin, as well as Indonesia President Joko Widodo, Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto, and Chile President Michelle Bachelet.

Xi’s upcoming Philippine visit follows just weeks after a United Nations-supported arbitral tribunal in the Netherlands ruling in favor to hear Manila’s historic case regarding Beijing’s South China Sea maritime claims.

Prior to attending the APEC meeting, Xi “will attend the 10th G20 Summit in Antalya, Turkey from November 14 to 16.” His participation in the G20 Summit is “at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic of Turkey.”

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim member economies — referred to as “member economies” — which make up approximately 40 percent of the world’s population, about 54 percent of the world GDP, and around 47 percent of world trade. It promotes free trade throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Besides the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), other upcoming APEC-related events and activities include the Concluding Senior Officials’ Meeting (CSOM) on November 13 and 14, the APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) on November 16 and 17, and the APEC CEO Summit which will take place from November 16 to 18.

This will be the second time the Philippines will be hosting APEC meetings. They previously hosted back in 1996.
