This particular doormat on Amazon has garnered a lot of attention. For some, it is just a doormat bearing the Indian flag. However, for many Indians, it is sign of disrespect. Many around the world wonder what is wrong with a flag on a doormat? Or how does it show disrespect? The answer to the question lies in the cultures of these countries. For people from countries such as India, touching something they revere and respect, with the bottom of their feet is a sign of disrespect. It is no wonder that the tricolour bearing doormat was in the eye of the social media storm.

The doormat in question was sold on Amazon’s Canada website. The vendors also offered the doormats with flags of other countries. However, the very idea of having the tricolour on a doormat sparked outrage. Some, such as Ratnesh Mishra, even wrote a Facebook Post about it. Some Indians requested the retailer to remove the product from its website. It has been now revealed that their efforts paid off and Amazon has now discontinued the product.

However, the move came only after India’s Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj escalated the matter. Some Indian social media users made sure that  Indian Ministers took note of the item. They tagged Swaraj in one of the posts, bringing the product to her attention. Swaraj is known for her swift action. She then made sure that Amazon Canada discontinued the item. She even asked them to stop selling the product and to withdraw others that insulted the Indian Tricolour.

According to a report in the Washington Post, an Amazon spokesman recently revealed that the company has discontinued and withdrawn the product. Amazon is no longer selling it on the website. The move comes after Swaraj tweeted a storm threatening a possible cancellation of existing visas issued to Amazon employees.

What did Sushma Swaraj do?

“Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately. If this is not done forthwith, we will not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official. We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier,”she said in a series of posts.

An article in Times of India states that the offensive doormats were sold by two vendors known as XLYL and Mayers Flag Doormats on Amazon Canada. Many had taken note of the product and tried to reach the online retailer requesting it to withdraw the same. However, things moved only after Swaraj swung into action. She also asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to take up the issue with Amazon.

While many are still surprised with the turn of events, those, who have been following the company think this is predictable. An article in Business Insider states that Amazon is heavily investing in India. The company will be pumping more than $5 billion in the coming years as it goes head on against local favourites such as Snapdeal and Flipkart. It is no wonder that it decided to delist the item, than risk getting into a bigger mess.
