It’s September 9, 2014, which means, it’s time for iPhone 6 to become official.
Apple’s launch event started at 10 am Pacific Time at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California and the company has already announced their two new handsets, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
So, the rumors were true indeed and this year we’ll have two different iPhones, both coming with premium specs and features. Like expected, iPhone Plus will be the better version and will come with a 5.5 inch 1080p display. On the other hand, the iPhone 6 will sport a slightly smaller 4.7 inch display with a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels. This means, pixel density wise, both the handsets are not really comparable to other flagships in the market, still we’ll have to play around with the device to check out the actual quality of the screen.
The overall design is totally new and the glasses are now curved into the body instead of just laying flat like previous generations. The front glass is ion strengthened instead of the rumored sapphire glass protection which is kind of disappointing; given the hype it managed to create a few weeks back. Also, both the devices are much thinner than earlier generations, with iPhone 6 and 6 Plus measuring 6.9mm and 7.1mm respectively.
The new iPhones come with the A8 processor which is 25% faster than previous generations. You get 16GB, 64GB and 128GB options on both the devices which should be enough for all of your storage needs.
Both the devices have an 8MP rear camera like the iPhone 5S, however, the company claims that they have managed to improve the image quality without having to increase the pixel count. They will also come with a new phase detection auto-focus which is much faster than traditional auto-focus. The 6 Plus being the better version will have an additional tech, the much needed OIS or Optical Image Stabilization. So images and videos should be less blurry on the larger iPhone.
Apple has improved the battery too on both the devices. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will give you 3G talk times of 14 and 24 hours respectively, which is much higher than iPhone 5S’s 10 hour figure.
Along with the standard connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, GPS etc., the new iPhones will have NFC too. It will be used to make one touch payments at a number of stores like McDonalds, Whole Foods, Disney, Apple etc.
Both the devices will be available in three colors namely, gold, silver and space grey. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will start at $199 and $299 respectively on contract for the 16GB variant. Add $100 more on the 16GB price for the 64GB variant and $200 for the 128GB variant for both the models.
Preorders start from September 12th and they will be available from September 19 onwards.
