$199 HP Stream 14 running Windows spotted online

$199 HP Stream 14 running Windows spotted onlineChromebooks are slowly gaining popularity, thanks to its extremely low price tag. Google and its partners have made these devices cheap so that anyone who’s looking for a basic computing device at a budget ends up buying a chromebook.

However, Chromebooks may not be the only cheap laptops in the market in the coming few months as a new HP laptop called HP Stream 14 running on windows was spotted online. The highlight of the device is that it retails for $199, which makes it one of the cheapest Windows computers in the market.

This puts HP Stream 14 in direct competition with the low cost Chromebooks. Given that millions of consumers are already comfortable with Windows OS, there’s a very good chance that these low cost Windows laptops will be well received by consumers.

In fact, HP and Microsoft have included many of the perks that you get with Chromebooks in this new Stream 14. For example, like the cloud storage feature found on the HP Chromebook 14, HP Stream 14 too comes with 100 GB of OneDrive storage for two years.

But that’s not the only similarity. The device sports a 14 inch 1366 x 768 resolution display much like the other chromebooks in the market. Inside, there’s an energy efficient quad core AMD processor with  Radeon R3 integrated graphics chipset and 2GB RAM. For storage, you’ll have 32GB or 64GB flash storage option along with a SDXC memory card slot. Some of the other features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Webcam, four beats audio speakers etc. Also the laptop comes with two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port and an HDMI port.

The entry of a low cost Windows netbook in the market won’t be surprising given that Microsoft had already announced its plans for cheap Windows running devices back in July. The company Chief Operating  Office, Kevin Turner said that Microsoft would release low cost tablets and netbooks as cheap as $199 later this year at the company’s 2014 Worldwide Partner Conference.

There are not many options for consumers when it comes to buying a laptop/ netbook at a budget price. But if Microsoft manages to release good laptops at such a low price tag, then Chromebooks will surely have a tough time attracting new customers.

The leak did not give out any details about the release date of the device, but we expect it to hit the market anytime in the next few weeks.
