This Man Aims To Reunite 100 Homeless Individuals With Their Loved Ones

Along the busy streets in the cities worldwide, while everyone is immersed with their own schedules, homeless people are scattered at one corner or within the street alleys. One gentleman has decided to take action and to use the power of social media to reunite these individuals with their families.

Kevin Adler is determined to travel around the country and to help hundreds of homeless people thru his project named “Miracle Messages.”

“In honor of my Uncle Mark, who suffered from schizophrenia and lived on-and-off the streets for 30 years, I wanted to do something using a bit of tech to help my homeless neighbors be seen as human,” said Adler.

The project was a result of an encounter Adler had with a homeless man in 2014 while walking along Market Street in San Francisco, a few days before Christmas.

Adler and a colleague came across a homeless man named Jeffrey who expressed his desire to find his sister. In an attempt to help Jeffrey, Adler recorded the former’s Christmas message for his family and uploaded the video to Facebook.

Within an hour, the video had gone viral and users began tagging Jeffrey’s sister in the post. His hometown had also raised $5000 within weeks to support him.

After waiting for 20 long years, Jeffrey was finally on the phone with his sister for the first time; they were later on reunited.

“I decided to do something about it. Like [Uncle] Mark, there are many people on the streets who suffer from mental illness, or drug addictions, or severe disabilities,” said Adler. “Many people who have families and people who miss them and love them, just like the rest of us.”

He added that Miracle Messages targets to increase awareness of what it’s like to live on the streets, from the firsthand perspective of those who do. By doing so, they aim to dispel myths and to build understanding; and to use a bit of technology “to help our homeless neighbors be seen as invaluable, complete, and human.”

To-date, Miracle Messages has been traveling across the US to help facilitate 100 reunions between the homeless and their long lost loved ones. Adler also aims to set the groundwork to create a new genre of TV called ‘social storytelling.’
