These past years, the world has enjoyed a barrage of Marvel movies and TV shows, birthing a new generation of superhero enthusiasts. Marvel has been very generous with their material, so while we wait for the next batch to come out on the silver screen and on our TV screens, let’s recap some of the most outstanding Marvel movie acting performances that we’ve seen so far.

1. Robert Downey. Jr.

Character: Tony Stark/Iron Man

Seen in: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron

Next film: Captain America: Civil War

When Robert Downey, Jr. took on the role of wisecracking playboy and inventor Tony Stark, fans had no problem as his persona fit the role perfectly. Movie after Marvel movie, Downey has continued to prove to the public that he has achieved the perfect balance of self-love and selflessness that the character is known for. Good on Marvel for starting off on the right foot with their movies!

2. Chris Evans

Character: Steve Rogers/Captain America

Seen in: Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron

Next film: Captain America: Civil War

Chris Evans fits the bill of the American hero with his all-around “good guy” demeanor, blonde hair and chiseled features (not to mention body) so Marvel received little to no complaints when he was cast as The Cap. Everyone is aware that Captain America was brought into the future without so much as a guidebook and Evans has The Cap’s lovable cluelessness down pat, while still exuding all the heroism and patriotism that the character is known for.

3. Chris Hemsworth

Character: Thor

Seen in: Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron

Next film: Thor: Ragnarok

There’s no doubting that, physically, Chris Hemsworth was the perfect choice for the big, booming Thor in the self-titled Marvel movie franchise. Hemsworth’s pairing with Natalie Portman (who plays his human love, scientist Jane Porter) emphasizes his sheer god-like size and stature. Hemsworth drops his Australian accent and eases into the role quite well, asserting his divine status while stomping around Earth and saving humans left and right.

4. Jamie Alexander

Character: Sif

Seen in: Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Next film: Thor: Ragnarok

Amidst the chaos of the Asgardian battleground is Sif, the only female warrior in Thor’s merry band of gods. Jamie Alexander does exceptionally well as the strong-willed Sif, who’s secretly in love with Thor. While Sif’s role is but a minor one in the huge storyline of Thor, Alexander is able to keep the Amazonian warrior exterior while conveying the tragic feelings of unrequited love.

5. Tom Hiddleston

Character: Loki

Seen in: Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World

Next film: Thor: Ragnarok

Women everywhere began to realize that it was alright to fall in love with the villain when Tom Hiddleston played Thor’s brother and arch-nemesis Loki. Hiddleston, with his heavy British-accent, is able to both charm the pants off and strike fear into the hearts of viewers. The Hiddles does Loki justice, even as the character battles through a lot of personal, deep-seated issues like wanting to be good and wanting to be the center of attention, even if it means being evil.
