Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s best player and he received the honor at the inaugural Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich. Real Madrid and Portugal forward Ronaldo, 31, beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann for the honor. Ronaldo also claimed the Ballon d’Or in December. Both awards honor his success in the Champions League with Real and Euro 2016 with Portugal.
Ronaldo and Messi always refrained from voting for each other for major awards. The best FIFA player award is no different, and each filled the top three slots with their own clubmates, the BBC noted. Also noteworthy is Carli Lloyd of the US. As such, she is now the world’s best female player.

Ronaldo Wins Another Ballon d’Or?
The FIFA world’s best player has been the recipient of the Fifa Ballon d’Or award for the past six years. However, the two awards are now separate from each other, ESPN reported. France Football magazine awarded a version of the honor since 1956.
However, starting last year, the world football’s governing body terminated any association with that award. And, instead, it now presents the Best Fifa Football Awards. Ronaldo is the first recipient of this prize. A mix of votes by national team captains, managers, journalists and even an online poll ended with Ronaldo’s victory. Each voting bloc counted for 25% of the total votes.

Carli Lloyd Best Female FIFA Player
Even though the US did not get an Olympic podium finish, a historic first, Carli Lloyd cemented her legacy with the Best Female FIFA Player award. After the Olympics, she made Houston Dash, her club, and her country, very proud. The 34-year old Lloyd bested German Olympic gold medalist Melanie Behringer and five-time winner Marta of Brazil. “I honestly was not expecting this,” Lloyd said. “I know Melanie did fantastic in the 2016 Olympics.”
